Safety Training Courses
The Office of Insurance & Risk Management offers compliance training as required per university policies.
In-person safety training is regularly scheduled on the downtown Atlanta campus. If you have a group of employees on a Perimeter Campus or other location requiring training, please contact us to see if we can accommodate your needs. Courses Currently Available:
Defensive Driving Courses
This Defensive Driving Course (DDC) is required for employees and students who drive GSU-owned vehicles for GSU business. The course will help you acquire the skills and knowledge needed to become a defensive driver.
Course Length: 6 hours
Fee: No fee
Location: 75 Piedmont Ave Room 1130
The in-person DDC is valid for a period of 3 years at which time you will need to retake the course to continue driving GSU-owned vehicles. You must bring your valid driver’s license with you to the class. Active participation is expected. Attendance and punctuality are required to receive a certificate.
The Annual Driver Training for Authorized University Drivers course is required for employees, students, and volunteers who drive GSU-owned vehicles. This course is for those who have previously been approved as GSU Authorized University Drivers and have completed the in-person NSC Defensive Driving Course.
Course Length: 30 minutes
Fee: No fee
Location: Online
This course is an overview of dos and don’ts for safe driving. The goal of the course is to promote safer driving behaviors for GSU employees and to decrease the number of accidents in GSU-owned vehicles. You will be required to complete and submit a motor vehicle record (MVR) authorization form and Driver Acknowledgement form annually to Insurance & Risk Management along with a copy of your driver’s license in order to maintain clearance to drive GSU-owned vehicles.
This course is required for GSU golf cart and gem car operators.

Location: Online/Self-paced
The presentation and video explain how to safely operate and use golf carts. This course emphasizes safety and proper procedures when operating a PTV. A Personal Transportation Vehicle Safety Certificate is issued for attending.

This training is for informational purposes only. This does not fulfill specific requirements of Georgia State University or the University System of Georgia.

This program is designed to educate USG employees on the importance and benefits of properly recognizing and safely working with hazardous materials.
- Right-To-Know Basic Awareness with the Global Harmonized System
This program is designed to educate all USG employees on the importance and benefits of properly recognizing and safely working with hazardous materials and provides an introduction to the new Global Hazmonized System requirements with an emphasis on new chemical labels and safety data sheets.Instructions: Click on this link and hit “NEXT” (in the upper right corner) to begin the training module. Continue through slides until you see the GREEN check mark to begin the Knowledge Test.
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training
This program is designed to provide a basic understanding of bloodborne pathogens, common modes of transmission, and methods of preventing exposure. - Computer Workstation Ergonomic Training
This program is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and educational tools to help identify potential ergonomic related injuries, recognize ergonomic risk factors, and reduce regionalized risks by using good ergonomic work practices and procedures. - Library Ergonomic Training for Stacking
This program is designed to provide an awareness of ergonomics and how it applies to handling books in the library. - Portable Fire Extinguisher Training / Information
A public service program was created by Brooks Equipment Company with the intention to provide customers and the general public easy access to useful information related to the application and proper use of fire extinguishers.
Upon completion of online safety training, a printable certificate is available.
